$80K Porsche Macan EV Has 380-Mile Range, 21-Minute Charging

Porsche today revealed the specs for its long-awaited 2024 Macan EV, and it did not disappoint.

Dubbed the Macan 4, the vehicle is Porsche’s first electric SUV, and the first of its gas-powered cars to get a battery-powered version. The gas-powered Macan launched a decade ago, the preorders for the electric version open today, with deliveries starting in late 2024.

“We are taking the Macan to a completely new level – with exceptional E-Performance, the new Driver Experience, and a very impressive design,” says Oliver Blume, chairman of the executive board of Porsche AG.

“Our aim is to offer the sportiest model in its segment with the all-electric Macan,” adds Jörg Kerner, vice president of the Macan product line.

With an $80,450 starting price, it’s on-par with competitors like the Tesla Model X. However, as expected, the Macan EV is more expensive than the gas-powered Macan, which starts at $62,550. The pricier Turbo trim starts at $106,950.

The Macan 4 is the first Porsche with the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture. Its other EV, the Taycan sedan, is built on a predecessor platform called J1.

The range is 380 miles combined for city/highway, and up to 487 miles in just the city (EVs are the opposite of gas-powered vehicles, as they get better mileage in cities than on highways). It will also lose range less quickly than other vehicles, thanks to a super low drag coefficient of 0.25, making it “one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market,” Porsche says.

Keep in mind, these range numbers are per the European WLTP scale, which tends to be higher than the American EPA estimates. Porsche will release US range specs closer to delivery, which begins in late 2024. Most industry experts are expecting the EPA range to clock in around 300 miles, which would be roughly on-par with competitors.

The charging speeds are more certain, however, and best-in-class. The 100kW battery works on up to 270kW charging stations, and goes from 10% to 80% in just 21 minutes. Here, the Macan EV edges out the Tesla Model X, which supports up to 250kW charging stations and powers up in 30 minutes, according to EVBox.

Other tech highlights include wall-to-wall dash screens and a new passenger display. “For the first time, the passenger can also view information, adjust settings on the infotainment system or stream video content while the car is being driven via their own optional 10.9-inch screen.”

In another first, a head-up display will help the driver stay focused on the road. Using augmented reality, key pieces of information such as turn-by-turn navigation will “appear” on the road ahead as “seamlessly integrated into the real world.”

With a quick “Hey Porsche,” drivers can trigger the voice assistant. Porsche did not mention whether the voice assistant is powered by ChatGPT or another large language model, as is the trend recently with other German automakers like Mercedes and Volkswagen.
